About The Muzilla Project

The Muzilla Project is a grassroots initiative to create an unofficial music compilation album for the Mozilla Summit 2010 in Whistler. The aim of the compilation is to celebrate the spirit of openness as it emerges in the music industry. All of these songs come from two independent, internet based "labels" or "platforms", Jamendo and Magnatune, that seek to provide fair music for both fans and artists.

Though both have somewhat different models, they both seek to explore ways in which to promote their music using systems based on openness. Their music isn't restricted or crippled and you are encouraged to share with your friends. With this compilation we want to celebrate Jamendo and Magnatune, for offering us alternatives that we as music fans seek, for using the possibilities of modern technologies instead of fighting them and for knowing that their fans are their best friends.

As John Buckman, the founder of Magnatune says: "People fall in love with new music by being exposed to it by others." Which is the reason their entire catalog is made available as 128kbps MP3s under the creative commons by-nc-sa license, that all their music can be listened to for free online, and that they have some very consumer friendly principles. As a music fan, you can take a subscription to Magnatune, and download all their music in lossless CD quality formats. Part of the subscription fee will be distributed amongst the artists whose music you download.

Jamendo is slightly different it offers MP3 and OGG versions for free under a creative commons license, with the possibility to donate in support of artists. It's basically a platform to bring musicians and their fans together. Both Jamendo and Magnatune also help artists make money by licensing their music to commercial projects.

The current music cartel is lobbying lawmakers everywhere for tougher "anti-piracy" laws, such as laws to disconnect people from the internet whose internet connection might have been (ab)used for downloading copyrighted content. In short the money you spend on music from the big labels is going to be used against you or your loved ones, maybe you will be disconnected because one of your children does not know the difference between watching MTV and sharing a file with their friends, or your clueless parents find themselves offline because they didn't properly secure their WiFi connection - which is now already an offense in several countries punishable with a fine. In these countries people who leave their connections open for others to use are now doing something illegal, but how did it ever become illegal to share your property with others?

It's time to seek music from outlets whose business model is not based on threats and who aren't lobbying to limit our fundamental freedoms. We have noted that many people are yet unaware of the alternatives available to them. Our foray into Magnatune and Jamendo has revealed a true treasure of music previously unknown to us. We discovered music created by true artists whose main motivation is that they love to make music. With this compilation we attempt to share that enthusiasm.

This compilation focuses on music that might be labeled as Electronic, Trance, Dance, or Lounge music, but rest assured that all genres are well represented on Magnatune and Jamendo. It was our choice to stick to one genre for this compilation album instead of mixing genres. The first parts of the album is faster in terms of beats per minute, the final tracks are more mellow.

As this year's summit theme is "Be More Like the Web", this compilation album is entirely virtual, which allowed us to do something unusual with the album cover. In the same spirit it is distributed via bittorrent only, the most efficient content distribution system to date. We have also chosen to use the OGG Vorbis format for the music, as we believe in open formats.

We ask you to avoid downloading the album during presentation times in order to avoid bogging down the network when it's needed for more important things. Downloading in the evening or at night is probably the best thing to do. After you've downloaded the album please keep seeding it.

We hope you will enjoy this music, and see it as a starting point in exploring alternative sources for your music. The featured artists all have more music available that we encourage you to explore. It was sometimes difficult for us to choose which of several excellent tracks to include in this compilation.

Enjoy the music and have a great summit!
